Our Policy

Bewley’s was founded on the Quaker values of community, equality, honesty, fairness and integrity of character. That’s why we work with certified ethical trading organisations such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and Utz. And irrespective of certification, we are committed to paying a fair price for all the produce we source.

With many of our coffee and tea farmers living in Third World Countries, it is more important than ever to consider their living and working conditions when formulating our trading policies, to make sure these farmers are paid a fair price for their produce. We build direct relationships with the world’s best coffee and tea producers and visit their farms regularly to ensure their employees are treated fairly.

By paying a fair price, we actively help our farmers to afford basic healthcare, education, and housing for their families. Over half the world’s coffee is produced on small family farms with only a few acres of coffee trees. Fairtrade certification provides a way for these farmers to increase their income by helping them organise into cooperatives and linking them directly to coffee importers.

We live by our ethical trading policy. So, for example, we pay a premium over market price for coffee at La Virgen Estate Coffee Farm in Nicaragua because it helps provide accommodation, medical clinics and a school on the farm. And in return, we know we’ll get excellent coffee.
