Our Blending
The secret of blending
Nothing beats a cup of tea! Whether it’s a mug of Bewley’s Gold Blend to dunk your digestives in or a cup of Bewley’s Original Blend to perk you up! But have you ever wondered how we create such different tastes? Well, the secret is in the blending!
- Our Master Blender travels the world tasting literally hundreds of teas right there on the tea estates. With over 30 years’ experience under his belt, his finely tuned palette judges appearance, flavour, colour, strength and briskness.
- The teas are then tasted again when they reach our factory in Dublin. This ensures that the tea is exactly the same quality as the one tasted in the original tea garden.
- Then comes the tricky part. A perfectly blended tea is like a musical chord – each note has to work in harmony to create just the right taste. Bewley’s award-winning Gold Blend is a perfect example. We use a high-grown Kenyan tea for a rich fresh flavour, an Assam tea from India for full-bodied character and Rwandan leaves for a deep golden colour.
It’s all in the detail
Like wine, each tea crop is not quite the same as the last. The weather might affect the crop, or it might be difficult to source our leaves from the exact same tea garden as previous years. But you want the same great taste each time you make a cup of Bewley’s tea.
Our Master Blender carefully adjusts the type and amounts of leaves used, keeping samples of previous batches to help him to keep the taste and appearance consistent. The result? A cup of Bewley’s Original Blend will taste the same whether it’s sipped in spring or autumn.
Tea Trivia
In Ireland we like a dash of milk in our tea. That’s why colour is so important. Teas are carefully blended using leaves which give a rich golden colour. This guarantees a bright golden colour even when milk is added.
