Earth Day 2021 with Bewley's

April 21, 2021 2 min read

Earth Day is a global annual event held on April 22nd each year to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The theme for Earth Day 2021 is 'Restore our Earth' which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking that can restore the world's ecosystems.

Earth Day and sustainable practices that promote a positive impact on the environment have always been a key focus for Bewley's as we have strived to make our planet a better place to be. For decades we have promoted both sustainable sourcing and the positive impacts we can have on our communities through our partnerships with our Fairtrade suppliers and bettering their lives.

We became a founding member of Origin Green in 2012, Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme, and have achieved a 35% reduction in energy, 17% reduction in water, 65% reduction in waste and a 53% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions since then. While we’re proud of our progress, there’s always more work to be done and we are committed to setting ambitious targets that minimise the impact our business has on the planet for decades to come as part of our ongoing commitment to the environment.

Ireland's First Carbon Neutral Coffee Producer

Bewley's became the first certified Carbon Neutral coffee company in Ireland in 2009. Since then we have taken further steps to reduce emissions through energy management programmes and waste reduction measures. Any remaining emissions are neutralised through carbon offsetting initiatives such as a reforestation project within a coffee-growing community in Peru and, more recently, in educational coffee programs helping farmers improve quality and yields at Comisuyl in Honduras. These projects represent Bewley’s ongoing commitment to dispersing our carbon credit offset purchases amongst smaller Co-Ops who need such funding most, and where sustainable initiatives are being undertaken at source.

Our sense of responsibility

Bewley's sense of responsibility extends far further than coffee farms and tea gardens. We believe in being ethical and responsible in everything we do and conducting our business in a manner that improves the health of the planet and the lives of all those we deal with.

This year, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of our partnership with Fairtrade Ireland. In 1996 we became the first company to introduce Fairtrade coffee to Ireland and since 2017, we have only sold 100% Fairtrade coffee.

The premium we pay for Fairtrade coffee is used by co-operatives susceptible to climate change such as SOPEXCCA in Jinotega, Nicaragua, to invest in training and coffee varietals that will grow higher up in the mountains, compensating for the temperature changes.

We continue each year to strive towards becoming more ethically sound and increasing the opportunities of all farmers in the co-operatives we work with.
